Indoor grills are great for burgers, chicken and fish that look and taste like they were grilled outdoors. But before you buy one, first decide whether you want an open grill or a contact model (which cooks from above and below, like a sandwich press). The open kind is larger and better for serving big groups. But contact units cook faster and take up less counter space. Fast Cooker The T-Fal Fit 'N Clean GC 4000-002 ($79.99; amazon.com), a contact model, dishes out delicious grilled cheese sandwiches and salmon fillets in record time. Bonus: To fit more food (it has room for four burgers), this compact unit unfolds into an open grill. Big breakthrough: The entire grill (minus the cord) goes in the dishwasher. Best Family-Size With enough room for four steaks or eight kebabs, the Oster Indoor Grill 4774 ($49.99; 800-334-0759, ext. 3), an open model, can feed a crowd - and fast. What we liked best: This standout didn't smoke or spatter. Both the base and the grill can be safely cleaned in the dishwasher. Most Versatile Use the ridged side of the BonJour Power 1800 Reversible Grill and Griddle 10600 ($80; bonjourproducts.com), an open model, to barbecue dinner, then turn it over for a flat surface for breakfast pancakes and eggs. This model browns fast and evenly, but spatters. Drawback: Although the Bonjour can be immersed in water, it's not dishwasher-safe. Splurge: For the Grill Gourmet The pricey Cuisinart Griddler GR-4 ($129; cuisinart.com) can be used as either a contact or an open grill and has both smooth and ridged plates. Plus, it has an adjustable lid, so supersized burgers or overstuffed paninis won't get squashed. The removable plates are easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher. The Latest Foreman So how did this famous boxer's new grill fare? George Foreman's Next Grilleration #GRP99 ($99.99; esalton.com, at mass merchandisers, specialty and department stores) was a fine indoor grill, and it was easier to clean than earlier versions.
